18 Reasons Why Bulldogs Are Undeniably The Best College Mascots

In a poll conducted by USA Today, English Bulldog Uga (University of Georgia’s mascot) came out on top as the best mascot in college football. That got us thinking: Why are Bulldogs so pawpular as school reps?

We did some brainstorming, and here are 18 reasons that made us realize why the mighty Bulldog is the ideal mascot.

1. They’re the epitome of sturdy, rugged pawesomeness.

2. They may look rough-and-tumble on the outside, but their insides are made of mushy loyalty.

3. Bulldogs have a calm and quiet personality…

4. …but when it comes to protecting their loved ones, they show true courage.

5. They are great sports, whether they are in the middle of the action or cheering on the sidelines!

6. They ranked as the fifth most popular breed in the U.S. in 2013…

7. …and came out on top as the #1 choice for pup parents in New York and Los Angeles.

8. They sit at the popular pup table at school. Over 43 universities have a Bulldog as their mascot (and don’t even ask us the ridiculous number of high schools that have chosen these wrinklebutts as their top dog too).

8. The first U.S. university mascot ever? Yale University’s English Bulldog : Handsome Dan. And it’s a total legacy. The current Bulldog that has the title is Handsome Dan XVII. There have been 16 Handsome Dans before him.

10. English Bulldogs can run up to 15 mph (24 kph). We’d like to see YOU run that fast.

11. When it comes to cuddling, they are numero uno!

12. If you had a staring contest with a Bulldog, you’d lose.

13. Bulldogs LOVE people and they are great with children!

14. You just can’t keep a Bulldog down. Adversity does NOT hold them back.

15. These tough lookin’ pooches have a special talent for skateboarding.

16. They are masters of tackling things, be it toys, treats, or balls going out of bounds!

17. Their school spirit fashion is unmatchable (a football jersey on these pups = the epitome of cuteness).

18. Plus, the most famous of them all, Uga, has inspired a book AND a documentary.
