That Neighbor Who Leaves Their Dog’s Poop? Science Is About To Bust Them.

Of course, we know you carry plenty of poop bags with you wherever you go, but you probably know someone who looks the other way when their dog does the deed.

Erin Atkinson, a property manager at Potala Village Apartments in Everett, WA, has had enough of this, well, crap. Some tenants at the property were leaving their pup’s poop everywhere. Atkinson says,

“There was poop inside the elevators, in the carpeted hallways, up on the roof.”

Gross.

Most cities and private establishments will slap you with a hefty fine you if you let your dog poop and run, but catching someone in the act is nearly impossible. It’s not like there’s a CSI team for poop scenes.

Except there is.

The team at BioPet Vet Lab invented PooPrints to catch the crappers and dashers. Roughly 1000 housing complexes across the United States use PooPrints. All it takes is a one-time fee of $29.95, paid for by the pet owner, and a quick swab of a pup’s cheek and their DNA goes on file. That DNA is tested against any poo samples that come into the lab.

The DNA testing is serious science. BioPet Vet Labs won’t take just any crap. It needs to be “cellular rich” and about the consistency of a milk shake.

Again, gross.

Atkinson says that the testing is making a difference at her apartments. There’s a lot less abandoned poop on the property now that one person racked up over $500 in fines in only one week.

That’s a crapton of money!

Everybody poops, but none of us like to step in it. PooPrints gives dog owners the type of accountability that many of them lack. This is super important in cities with large numbers of dogs.

NYCPooch reported that there were roughly 600,000 dogs in New York City as of 2012. Since that time, the number has likely grown. The Seattle Times notes that the Seattle area has 50 percent more dogs than kids!

With pup populations on the rise in major cities, PooPrints is going to become the standard in housing complexes. So, no matter how covert and cool you think you and pooch are when it comes to pooping, there’s going to be no place for you and your dirty, stinky secrets to hide.
