Vegetables are important for a healthy and balanced diet, and this can be true for our pups as well. However, there are some things you should know before going to town in the produce aisle buying veggies for your pups.
**As with all food, each and every dog is different so be sure to talk to your vet before changing up your pup’s diet.**
1. Leafy greens are great! They provide antioxidants and minerals that support a dog's health.
2. Tomatoes and dogs generally don’t mix. The solanine and natural toxins can be harmful to pups so it’s best to keep them away.
3. Carrots are great veggies that support a healthy skin and coat in dogs. They are high in sugar so control the quantity!
4. Some dogs are super picky about eating their veggies, just like kids. Some sources
attribute this to the fact that in the wild, canines eat plant material pre-digested.
5. Onions – surely you must know of this one! Stay away from these as they can cause red blood cell damage and anemia in dogs.
6. Leafy greens also have pH balancing properties that are great for dogs.
7. Veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower have been claimed to link with hypothyroidism. Dr. Dobias
, a holistic and natural vet, cautions his readers when feeding these vegetables although no solid findings have been revealed yet.
8. Leafy vegetables are good sources of fiber to promote healthy digestion.
9. Radishes are great sources of vitamins, folic acid and potassium, and in healthy quantities are a perfectly great crunchy snack for pups.
10. Pumpkin is a GREAT super food to supplement your dog’s diet with. It promotes good urinary and digestive health, and can help with weight loss as well.
11. Celery’s stringy nature can actually be a choking hazard for pups, so be careful with this one.
12. Veggies are great supplements to a healthy doggy diet, but too much can also be hard on their digestive tracts.
