World War II hero, Sergeant Gander, was honored this week with a statue at Gander Heritage Memorial Park.

This brave task eventually cost the dog his life. A grenade exploded in his mouth while he was rushing it away from the soldiers.

Philip Doddridge was one of those soldiers. He says:

A statue representing the men of the Royal Rifles stands beside Sergeant Gander at the monument.
