Two Shy Dogs Met For The First Time In A Shelter, And Now They’re Inseparable

Susie Q and Charlie Brown (affectionately known by the staff and volunteers as “The Browns”) came into the SPCA of Hernando County separately, but they’ll be leaving together.

Charlie arrived at the shelter several years ago very distrusting of people, and when Susie Q found herself at the SPCA more than a year later, her unknown past made her especially frightened of strangers. If either of them were going to find homes, it would take a lot of patience and work on their socialization skills.

Vreli Middleton, a canine massage therapist who visits the shelter to help the dogs manage their stress and any injuries, first noticed the pair’s unusual relationship out in the play yard. Middleton told iHeartDogs.com:

While working with Suzi and a couple of the other dogs she was in a run with I noticed she would often sit against the fence with the next run, which was where Charlie was, and he would be sitting next to her [on the other side of the fence]. I suggested we put them together as I could see there was a connection and felt it could help Suzi learn to trust those people that Charlie trusted.

Sure enough, when staff introduced the two they took to each other like old friends. They played and wrestled and wagged their tails, and no one would ever think they’d had a shy bone in their bodies.

Charlie Brown and Suzie Q are just so happy to have found each other, very happy pups 🙂

Charlie, who has been waiting so long to find a family, does warm up to humans after he gets to know them, but Susie Q is not quite so willing. It was the shelter’s hope that they both could grow into wonderfully friendly dogs together.

Well, it seems that they’ve been making great improvements, because the two caught one special woman’s eye. Carol was initially concerned about the dogs’ anxiety toward people, but she knew they were the ones for her. She has been visiting the shelter frequently to build their relationship and create a bond, and Charlie Brown and Susie will become part of her family on December 15th.

This has been a very long time coming for Charlie, and Susie Q now gets to learn how to love from her very best friend and a human who already adores them. Happy holidays, pups! This is gonna be a good one.
