Hobbling down the side of the road, covered in blood, Bella the puppy is lucky to be alive after being struck by one car and dragged by another. South Carolina resident Julie Jones Horton pulled over when she spotted the puppy and chased him down. Terrified, Bella feared for her life and ran.
Thankfully, a passing motorist saw the dog and let Bella jump into their car, after which they both rushed Bella to Magnolia Veterinary Hospital for emergency treatment. While at the hospital, vets determined that Bella had not only been run over, she was also shot with a BB gun.
“There were old wounds there, too,” Horton told Fox Carolina. “It looked like it wasn’t the first time.”
Bella’s medical treatment totaled a whopping $1,000, which Horton split with another woman who assisted with the rescue. Bella’s badly damaged paws were also wrapped in sugar wraps, which had to be replaced daily and cost $40 each time.
Despite the daunting medical bill, Horton reports that Bella is doing better and is improving every day.
“She’s eating and coming around with some tail wags,” she said. “But any voice that might seem loud, it just scares her.”
