Uggie, Former Shelter Puppy-Turned-Accomplished Dog Actor Has Died

Award-winning canine actor Uggie has died.

The 13-year-old Jack Russell Terrier lost his battle with prostate illness on Friday in Los Angeles. Uggie was best known for his work in 2011’s Academy Award winning film, The Artist.

The one-time shelter pup was awarded the Palm Dog at the Festival de Can(i)nes, and was the first dog to be honored with paw prints in the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He came into the public eye for his star turn in Water for Elephants, and was also the Nintendo spokesdog. Uggie loved his work, and sprung into action any time the cameras were on.

Uggie documented his life in a 2012 tell-all memoir. (Trailer below.)

He leaves behind his human, animal trainer Oscar Von Muller; trainer for The Artist Sarah Clifford; and beloved co-star and special lady friend Reese Witherspoon.

Clifford remarked, “(Uggie was) a perfect little terrier. I will forever hold him dearly in my heart and never forget his infinite love for chicken and hot dogs.”
