8 Dog “Facts” We All Believed Growing Up

8 Dog “Facts” We All Believed Growing Up

As a child, the things we believe to be true about our dogs are almost as realistic as the Tooth Fairy or Superman. In all likelihood, our dogs weren’t throwing parties with the pooches next door every time we left for school (though it is fun to imagine).

Though most of us have now reached the age where we know that our dogs can’t have actual conversations with us, it takes more than some silly “science” to take the kid out of a dog lover. Below are eight things we believed about our dogs growing up (and may still believe to this day).

1. Your Dog Can Read Your Mind

How is it that our dogs always know when we’re feeling sad and need some extra cuddles? As a kid, the answer was simple: they can read our minds. Obviously our dogs are just so smart that they can hear what we’re thinking — that’s the only logical explanation behind their heightened senses, really.

2. Your Dog Will Never Die

Every kid (and the occasional hopeful adult) thinks that their dog is invincible. One of the better parts of growing up was not having to worry about your dog’s wellbeing, because they were indestructible and weren’t going anywhere.

3. When Dogs Do Pass Away, They Go To A Wonderful Place Called Doggie Heaven

If you ever had the unfortunate experience of a childhood dog passing away, you probably also had the talk with one of your parents about your dog “taking a trip to doggie heaven”. Such was the case for a three-year-old Luke Westbrook, who wrote letters to his late dog Moe addressed to “Moe Westbrook, Doggie Heaven, Cloud 1.”

4. Your Dog Doesn’t Mind Being Stepped On And Cuddled In Every Which Way

The child version of ourselves didn’t really take into consideration how our dogs felt when we used them as a pillow or a pony.

5. Your Dog Couldn’t Hurt A Fly

Despite your parents’ futile efforts to warn you that your puppy is teething, you had full faith in your puppy not to bite you because that’s your puppy and he would never hurt you.

6. Your Dog Needs As Many Blankets As Possible And A Good Tuck-In To Sleepy Soundly

Perhaps because of how patient our dogs are, it’s hard for a child to tell that their dog does not, in fact, need a proper tuck-in before bedtime like a human baby would. Though every dog is different — some prefer sleeping on the cold floor while others prefer the comfort of a hooman’s bed — few require blankets on top of their coats of fur to stay warm.

7. Your Dog Loves Taking Baths As Much As You Do

As a child, bath time is all about kicking back and relaxing with your favorite rubber duck and some suds, so it would only make sense that your dog would love soaking as much as you do. Unfortunately, though, this isn’t the case — giving a dog a bath can be as hard as getting them in the car to go to the vet.

8. EVERYONE Is A Dog Person

Remember that one friend who wouldn’t come over to your house for a playdate because she was scared of your dog? Let’s just say that friendship didn’t last long.
